Creating resource mappings under SRM 6.0 environment-Part 1

Today we would discuss on inventory mappings of the protected site to the recovery site. Now the question would be why would you need these mappings. We all know the VM’s are replicated either via Array Based Replication or vSphere Replication.

Inventory mappings play a crucial because once VM’s are replicated on the event of an disaster SRM has the functionality to assign the VM’s with appropriate network, folder structure, resources and so on. If we do not configure these mapping then once VM’s are online on the recovery site it would not have proper network assignments making it not accessible across the network. In short inventory mappings includes resource pools, folder structure & network assignments of protected site to recovery site.

Let us proceed configuring these mappings part by part. In this article I would proceed with configuring resource mappings.

Resource mappings generally explains which compute resources are taken in to consideration at recovery site. Critical VM’s such Databases being a part of certain resource pools on the event of an disaster when that specific VM is online it should be a part of the similar resource pool on the recovery site as well. This ensures it has been granted the required resources and controlled on a uniform manner

Please note any new resource pool created in protected site is not automatically created on the recovery site. In order to do the necessary mapping ensure these resource pools exist on the recovery site as well.

Login to the web client of the protected site and GoTo Home-Site Recovery-Sites

Click the vCenter of the protected Site as illustrated below.

Scroll down further and you would find option to configure resource mapping. Click on create resource mapping.

You need to map the resource pools based on your infrastructure. In my current eg.I have  resource pool with the identity production configured for production resource pool on the recovery site and same applies to non production resource pool as well. Once this mapping is done. Click Next.

Reverse mapping is automatically done .Just go ahead and select applicable objects. Reverse mapping is useful when VM’s from recovery site are needed to fail-over back to protected site.

You can verify that resource mapping has been successfully completed.
